Chlorine, the Microbiome and Your Skin: What Really Happens After Swimming?

Chlorine, the Microbiome and Your Skin: What Really Happens After Swimming?

A TRISWIM expert explains how to enjoy the pool without unwanted skin effects

As autumn arrives, more and more people in Poland return to indoor swimming pools. Swimming is one of the healthiest forms of physical activity - it strengthens immunity, improves circulation, supports recovery and engages over 90% of the body’s muscles. It has become a symbol of a modern, balanced lifestyle where caring for the body goes hand in hand with conscious skin health.

However, contact with chlorinated water can come with a price: dryness, irritation and disruption of the skin’s natural microbiome. How can you prevent this? Cosmetologist Dorota Łogin, TRISWIM Expert, explains.

Chlorine - the guardian of clean water, not the enemy of your skin

Chlorine is essential for keeping pool water clean and safe. It eliminates harmful bacteria and viruses, protecting swimmers from infections.

The issue begins when chlorine reacts with the lipids and proteins naturally present on the skin. This reaction forms chloramines - irritating compounds that weaken the hydrolipid barrier and disturb the skin’s microbiome. The result can be micro-cracks, redness, itching and a tight, uncomfortable feeling.

“Chlorine is not the enemy - it’s an ally in keeping the water clean. The key is not to fight it, but to take conscious care of the skin after swimming so it can regain its natural balance,” says cosmetologist Dorota Łogin.
“After water exposure, the microbiome needs support to fully restore its protective functions.”

Post-swim care - three minutes that make a real difference

A shower after swimming is not just about hygiene - it’s a crucial step in protecting the skin. Regular soap does not effectively remove chlorine or chloramines. Only specialist products can neutralize them while rebuilding the lipid barrier.

It’s worth choosing formulas enriched with aloe vera, provitamin B5, chamomile and soothing botanical ingredients that reduce irritation, provide moisture and support regeneration.

“After swimming, the skin needs cleansing, but more importantly, it needs its protective barrier rebuilt - and this step is often overlooked,” explains Dorota Łogin.
“Using products that neutralize chlorine removes irritants while delivering nourishing and moisturizing ingredients. This simple post-swim ritual protects the skin from dryness, irritation and microbiome imbalance.”

Importantly, it is these disruptions in the skin barrier - not simply “catching a chill after swimming” - that are often behind recurring infections following pool use.

Did you know? Standard chlorine levels in pool water range from 0.3-0.6 mg/l. That’s not much, but when combined with hard water rich in calcium and magnesium, it can drastically increase dryness and disturb the skin’s pH.

Conscious hygiene - benefits for your skin and the swimming environment

Through its “Proper Hygiene Before and After Swimming” initiative, TRISWIM emphasizes that showering before and after swimming is a small habit shift that has a big impact — both on skin health and water quality in the pool.

“Conscious hygiene is a simple action that positively influences both the pool environment and our skin. It’s worth promoting not only in swimming schools but also among adults,” adds the expert.

TRISWIM - global expertise with a local mission

For years, TRISWIM has been developing skincare products created by athletes, dermatologists and skin-care experts. The formulas neutralize chlorine, bromine and salt, while supporting the restoration of the skin’s and hair’s natural protective barrier.

Did you know? (Skin & Pool Facts)

  • Up to 30% of chlorine may remain on the skin after swimming if not properly neutralized.

  • Just 10 minutes in chlorinated water can reduce skin microbiome diversity by up to 40% — and full recovery may take more than 24 hours.

  • Chlorine that isn’t neutralized can continue to dry out the skin and hair for up to 8 hours after leaving the pool.

  • Hard water (150–500 mg/l of calcium and magnesium) intensifies chlorine’s irritating effects, disrupting the acidic protective mantle of the skin.

  • Swimming engages 90% of the muscles, supports the nervous system, improves memory, concentration and stress resilience.
